The Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago is holding its fifth Not Just Another Pretty Face, a commissioning project that connects artists with patrons--be they long time art enthusiasts or new collectors. There will be a Salon at the Art Center beginning at 6 p.m. on November 12, 2012. A Number of notable Chicago artists will be on hand. This is a great place for art enthusiasts to learn how to build a collection--especially via commissioning contemporary art. It enables participants to form a relatinship with an area artist and not just buy pieces but inspire them For more information head HERE. I met Linda Troeller during Art Basel week 2011. I interviewed her (look for that here in a week or so). Troeller is a wonderful photographer who specializes, if she has a specialty because she has a large body of work, in the self-portrait. Troeller is leading a series of workshops from August 26 to September 1, 2012 at Maine Media in Rockport, Maine. The workshops are for intermediate and advanced photographers on the self-portrait. To find out details of the classes go HERE. Space is limited. The self portrait is more than just holding a camera away from your face and snapping a way. In Troeller’s work it is a way to understand where we are in life and where we fit in the world. The workshops Troeller is teaching will take students to another level using a mirror, roll playing and creative narrative. Every photo we take tells a story and we can create those stories. Troeller has led other workshops; at Yale, Bournemouth College (UK), University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Parsons and the School of Visual Arts. Her work has won many awards and she has been exhibited worldwide. She was inspired into being a photographer by Georgie O’Keeffe. She was an and assistant at the Ansel Adams Workshops with Adams and Annie Leibowitz and model for such photographers at Lucien Clergue and Eikoh Hosoe. Her book , Mucalinda- Self-Portrait + Self-Reflection, was released last year. For more information on Troeller head to www.lindatroeller.com. _ Next Art Chicago, working with Chicago Gallery News, are hosting Collectors Colloquium, six sessions to help collectors develop collecting skills and a discerning eye. Each session will be led by an art professional—artists, art dealers, collectors and curators. Each will give tips and share ideas on buying art. Next recommends attending all six sessions as the focus will be different in each and will build on information contained in previous sessions. This is a great opportunity for Chicago area folks who are interested in collecting. Keep in mind, this isn’t about buying Picassos. It is, in part I am sure, about helping you see new artists and the potential of their work. The cost is $25 per session, $75 for access to the sessions online and $120 for six sessions in person and online To register go HERE. _ Session 1: Collecting Case Studies

There were a few schools at the 2011 C2E2 and I took time to chat to a couple of them. Westwood College in Dupage (who had their own comic book sample). The Institute for Comic Studies booth was manned by a nice young woman, Hanna Kim, who is a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. I don’t know much about degree programs that lead to a career in drawing comics or drawing graphic novels. But one thing I do no intimately is that taking classes isn’t a bad thing. Getting into debt taking classes is always a bad thing, unless you are becoming a patent attorney or an M.D. Nonetheless these videos are worth a look. I might look further into this and find out if it is a sign of something mentioned in the first written piece about C2E2—is this sort of art gaining acceptance in fine art circles? Westwood might not be in the middle of that circle but the Art Institute certainly is. If I get inspired maybe I will look into a larger piece on this and maybe on what the average illustrator makes and how much you want to spend on the path to that career. Wow, this is kind of a downer of a written bit. I wish I could draw, I would make a smiley face or something. |
