Mitchell, also known for his portrait photography, grew up in Manitoba and Oregon. His work is, in part, an examination of why we "believe" certain images as real; does a photograph truly represent the truth? Unsurprisingly, given his background, he paints from photographs.
Graeme Mitchell's Detached Pictures runs at Wilding Cran Gallery (939 South Santa Fe Ave, Los Angeles) April 1 to May 28, 2017. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday April 1.

High Definition, paintings by Kyle Surges, runs at McCormick Gallery (835 West Washington Blvd., Chicago) March 17 to May 6, 2017. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 17. Surges paintings (yes these are paintings) aim to be photo-realistic in their representation of a variety of "mundane" manufactured items. Find out more about the artist at www.kylesurges.com. photos by Patrick Ogle Galeria Bernice Arvani (Sao Paulo) showed work by Ubi Bava, Leon Ferrari and Mira Schendel at Pinta Miami 2016. First of all, apologies to Schendel for the reflection on the edge of her painting. It was the best shot of an interesting piece. Find out more about all three artists at the gallery link above. photos by Patrick Ogle Sammer Gallery (Miami) showed work from Lolo (Dolores) Soldevilla at Pinta Miami 2016. Lolo, as she signed her work, was born in Cuba and studied in France in the late 1940s and early 50s. She painted, sculpted, was a draftsman, a professor and a toy designer. Soldevilla also was co-founder of Galería de Arte Color (Havana). Like many women artists of her day she doesn't seem to have gotten her due. This is one of the reasons Pinta is always worth visiting; you will see artists you know and others you should know from Latin America. photos by Patrick Ogle Art Noveau Gallery (Miami) showed work by Milton Becerra at Pinta Miami 2016. Becerra is a Venezuelan artist who studied at the Cristóbal Rojas School of Art. He has worked out of Paris since 1980. He is part of the Land Art movement (the New World branch which is subtly different from the European verson). He has been exhibiting work since the early 1970s. You can find out more HERE. |
