NF Gallery (Madrid) Showed Work By Pipo Hernandez Rivero And Chiharo Shiota At Pulse Miami 20132/17/2014 NF Gallery (Madrid) showed work by Pipo Hernandez Rivero and Chiharu Shiota at Pulse Miami 2013. We've written about Shiota, a Japanese artist who is best known for his haunting installation pieces like THIS or THIS (video midway down page). These pieces are different from these earlier works, more earthy in their material and more "of this world." Rivero is a Spanish artist born in the Canary Islands. Solo and group shows have mostly been in Spain and this is hopefully a precursor to more work being shown in the United States. Emily Jacir’s Intervals opens at Alexander and Bonin (132 Tenth Ave., New York) March 1, 2014. The exhibit is of work from 1998 to 2012. None of the pieces have been shown in the USA. This is also the artist's first solo show since her show at the Guggenheim in 2009. Her work deals with silenced historical narratives, movement, resistance and exchange. Books, libraries and translations reoccur in her work. Her installation ex libris 2010-2012 will be on the gallery's first floor. This installation commemorates the approximately 30,000 books taken from Palestinian homes, libraries and institutions in 1948. Six thousand of these books are kept in the Jewish Nationa and University Library in Jerusalem. They are designated "A.P." (Abandoned Property). Jacir photographed these books with her cell phone during visits to the library over two years. This is one of the installations and works by Jacir to be shown. Adah Rose Gallery (Kensington, Md) is one of the first galleries featured this year from Pulse Miami 2013. A video interview with artist Jessica Drenk was posted December 6, 2013. Another piece by Drenk, Implement, is shown below. Drenk was not the only artist shown by Adah Rose Gallery including; Brian Dupont, Joan Belmar, Chris Trueman and Allison Rash. Galerie Stefan Röpke (Cologne) showed work by Anselm Kiefer, Martin Kippenberger and Max Neumann at Pulse Miami 2013. Neumann, who lives in Berlin, is represented by the gallery. His painting of people lack features and are descriptive of emotions. They are allegories rather than portraits. Two of his works are shown here. Kiefer, another German artist and one you should know, takes his inspiration from German history and culture. He is considered one of the most significant German artists of his generation. The Metropolitan Museum has an excellent description of his career and work HERE. Kippenberger seemed to work in just about every single medium there is: sculpture, photography, painting, pieces on paper, printing and other odds and ends. He was also one of those "shooting star" sorts of artists. He created this wide variety of work before dying of liver cancer at the age of 44. Galeria Senda (Barcelona) showed paintings by Oleg Dou, Gino Rubert and Anthony Giocolea at Pulse Miami 2013. Dou is an artist we've written about before. In 2011 the Russian artist's work was also shown by Galeria Senda at Pulse. His works, at that time were inspired by 19th century photos of dead children. Giocolea was born in Atlanta and currently works out of New York City. His works in sculpture, painting and photography. He studied at the University of Georgia This piece is graphite, acrylic and china marker on mylar. Rubert is a Mexican artist who was also shown previously by Galeria Senda at Pulse Miami (apologies for the typos in the link). As stated there his work has an odd perspective and feels almost like stills from animation. There is something lifelike about them too which is odd given the studied unnaturalness of his subjects. Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland) showed this untitled piece by Isaac Layman at Pulse Miami 2013. This piece is a "photographic construction, archival inkjet print." I honestly couldn't recall ifthis was three dimensional or just looked that way! I had to look it up. Layman, from Seattle, was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Frye Art Museum, also in Seattle. He is a remarkable photographer and his subject matter is often things we see every day, mundane bits of this in that that he finds in the home. Loyola University Museum of Art (820 North Michigan Ave.) presents two exhibits Of Work By Edward Gorey; Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey and G i For Gorey-C is for Chicago: The Collection of Thomas Michalak. Both exhibits run February 15 to June 15, 2014. This is shockingly the first major exhibit of Gorey's work in Chicago. Hundreds of works and other odds and ends are included in the exhibit. Questions? call 312.915.7600 Aero Dynamisms, sculptures by Ian Schneller/Specimen Products runs from April 11 to May 31, 2014 at Packer Schopf Gallery (942 West Lake, Chicago). There will be a reception, with the artist, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014. This is Schneller's solo debut with the gallery. Many music fans know of his work with Andrew Bird and may also think; he makes musical instruments." Yes, he does. His horns and other instruments are wonderful instruments but also marvelous sculpture. His work has recently been in sound installations at the Guggenheim and MCA. This exhibit is also a sound installation with various Speciment crreated speakers, amplifiers and sculptures. At another publication I interviewed Schneller on several occassions about his work creating more traditional musical instruments (although the word "traditional" is awkward to use when writing of Schneller). I always thought of them as art even in that context. The event will premiere new music by Glenn Kotche featuring eighth blackbird and Kronos Quartet. Nate Burbeck's Places Unknown, runs from February 20 to March 25, 2014 at Anna Zorina Gallery (533 West 23rd St., New York). There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 20. The show is of paintings from 2011 to the present. All the images are of quintisentially Americam locations but with a twist; a surreal element is thrown in to disrupt the viewer's expectations. There is a great deal that goes into the creation of these pieces. Burbeck is a mix of painter, photogrpher, draftsman and location scout. The preparation for creating these works includes examination of satellite images and trips to locations around the country after areas are identified. It combines old-school artistic technique with the modern technology. It is a fascinating process. Burbeck graduated from St. John's University in Minnesota and was named as one of "Ten Artists to Watch," by the Walker Arts Center. This is his first New York City solo exhibit. |
